There are three main storylines in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet spread out across the Paldea region. These objectives can technically be tackled in any order that players desire, but the lack of level-scaling means that it’s fairly easy for Pokemon Trainers to find themselves in a battle they’re not quite ready for yet. The lack of level-scaling has also made it so while players can technically complete the game in any order they want, there is an optimal path they can follow for the best chance at success.

Unfortunately, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s optimal path can be confusing, as it has players bouncing all around Paldea. As pointed out in an image recently shared to Reddit by user SakN95, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s optimal path may be the best way to complete the game without needing to grind levels, but it’s still not entirely ideal. For example, one objective has players all the way in the southwestern corner of the map to fight the Psychic-type gym leader, while the next one has players traveling to the exact opposite end to take on the Ice-type gym leader.
This means some excessive traveling for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players that want to follow the optimal path through the game, though there are ways to alleviate the frustrations a bit. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fast-travel should go a long way in cutting down on the time it takes to get from one objective to another. Of course, it all depends on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players looking up the optimal path through the game, which means those who don’t will still likely find themselves in battles that they are clearly not ready for, and not really through any fault of their own.
The lack of level-scaling in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was a hot button topic prior to the games’ launch. If Game Freak decides to produce another open world Pokemon game for the next main series entry, one has to imagine that level scaling will at least be considered, as it would go a long way in alleviating some of the problems players have with the games.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
