The umpire was greeted with applause from the PNC Field crowd prior to Thursday’s Pirates-Rays game in Pittsburgh.
Tumpane wanted nothing to do with the tribute, according to attendees in the stadium.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle also offered some thoughts on the situation earlier in the day, and heaped praise on the umpire.
Tumpane stopped a woman from leaping off the bridge on Wednesday, and spoke with her until authorities arrived on the scene.
