“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” ITV wrote in a statement. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
Morgan’s decision to leave the popular morning show came after he faced criticism for his response to an interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
During the interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle revealed that she had suicidal thoughts during her time as a member of the royal family. Morgan criticized Markle the next day, calling it “a two hour trash-a-thon of our royal family, of the monarchy, of everything the queen has worked so hard for.”
On Monday, Morgan spoke about the interview once again, saying that he has serious concerns about what Markle said but noted that “mental illness and suicide are clearly extremely serious things…and if somebody is feeling that way they should get the treatment and the help they need.”
Shortly after the announcement by ITV, people took to social media to express their views, sharing memes and jokes.
A number of social media users shared comments Vice President Kamala Harris made after President Joe Biden was announced the winner of the 2020 election.
“WE DID IT JOE!!!!!” Twitter user Steph Yeboah wrote.
Several other Twitter users echoed a similar response, while others shared photos and clips of Harris speaking to Biden after the election.
Twitter user Bunny Galore shared a video from this morning’s airing of Good Morning Britain when Morgan walked off of set after he was criticized by co-host Alex Beresford.
“Piers Morgan is gone. Go against Meghan, and it’ll cost you,” Twitter user Murad Merali wrote with a picture of Markle winking at the camera.
Twitter user Kojo Anim posted a gif of Carlton dancing from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, with a caption that read, “There’s a good lad @piersmorgan QUIT before you got SACKED.”
Max Burns, who serves as the communication director for New York State Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou wrote, “Piers Morgan tried to flex on Meghan Markle and then Twitter sent him to the coroner.”
New York Times bestselling author Annie F. Downs wrote, “I have so many thoughts about this guy and what wounded pride corrodes into when left unchecked/unrepented. (Actually, those are my thoughts. Amen.)”
Twitter user Chukwu Ka shared a photo of Markle and Morgan, writing “The Shortest Story Ever.”
“Tomorrow will definitely be a Good Morning Britain. Bye @piersmorgan,” the Irish singing duo Jedward wrote.
The announcement by ITV on Tuesday the U.K.’s Office of Communication (Ofcom) reported that they had received more than 41,000 complaints after Monday’s airing of Good Morning Britain.
